Advice for Space Systems Unit

Hello, everyone. I’m looking for ideas relating to interesting ways to implement Formative within a science space systems unit. I have been utilizing the platform Defined STEM at my school and I’m wondering if the projects/tasks on this website could be incorporated into Formative? Along those lines, has anyone utilized cK12.org in tandem with Formative? Perhaps some of you have information relating to imbedding webquests, virtual field trips, and/or any other effective and interesting science websites. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I do not use the specific platforms you mention, but I do teach this in both 5th and 8th grade. I am not done with 8th grade, but I am done with my planning for 5th which could give you an idea of what can be done in Formative.

  1. Where is the Earth located? - https://goformative.com/clone/OMKNWY
  2. Objects in the Solar System - https://goformative.com/clone/ELRUNH
  3. Phases of the Moon - https://goformative.com/clone/UXTCAP
  4. Tides - https://goformative.com/clone/ZTKEYP
  5. Eclipses - https://goformative.com/clone/SRNKPS

Both Tides and Eclipses use Gizmos, which are a paid service from Enchanted Learning.

Once we have gone through all of that, my students go on to a project on Constellations

I will post something similar when I am done with the 8th grade stuff.

Yay! Thank you @mgarcia. I think I can use all of these! I have a question about Gizmos. I just got an account as I did not think it would let me as an adult educator, but they responded quickly and I now have one. When you embed Gizmos, do you HAVE to assign it to a class on the gizmos platform? I probably just go back review some videos.

Hi @msashlylcot. yes, you do have to assign the Gizmo to your classes on their platform, and your students will have to also have an account, otherwise their time will be limited.

I saw that the free account only allows for 5 minutes a day, is there anyway around that? (without paying )

Unfortunately no. It took 8 teachers that pledged to use it (with check ins mind you) and 5 years of begging fo my district to shell out the cash :frowning:
