Right now my team and I have been using Formative to take the place of our paper Quick Checks (similar to quizzes). We have played around a little with incorporating it more and using it for more than an assessment, but we need a little help. How have you guys used Formative to supplement your lessons other than an assessment tool?
Formative is great for a lot of different aspects of gathering information from students. I teach science and all my in-class and homework are run through Formative. For math type questions I often haves several questions that will instantly grade so students can know if they have the process down, and can ask me right away if they don’t. I also like formative because it allows me to leave feedback and students can go back and fix their work for anything that I have setup as practice. I also do the same for some assessments for corrections and partial credit back. I honestly use it less for formal assessments than for tracking student work, warm-ups, collaboration. Since it auto-saves everything, no more lost work!
I teach Science in middle-school, and use formative for most of my class-work, from embedded simulations to webquests, hyperdocs and walking students through activities.
Where is the earth located - https://goformative.com/clone/OMKNWY where students take notes while interacting with different websites and videos in order to write an extended response answer.
Phases of the Moon - https://goformative.com/clone/UXTCAP , a webquest
Pocket solar system - https://goformative.com/clone/VWXDTZ, a classroom activity

Not everything is actually graded. In most cases, only the application question(s) is graded, the rest are the students’ notes and put in place simply for me to have conversations with the students.
I use my Formatives in place of worksheets. Students get instant feedback and know if they need to get assistance or not. I’ve also used them as a quick check in class.
I have embedded Quizlets to help in learning. The seem to have more fun and get a better understanding with the more interactive I make an assignment… but it also helps me gauge their progress. It makes learning fun!
What great ideas! I’ve never even thought about using formative for things like webquests and classroom activities. I’ve sort of been stuck on using it for quick checks, quizzes and tests. Thank you for sharing.
If you get tired of Quizlets, you may want to give LearningApps a try. https://learningapps.org/
Much like Quizlet, you create your own activities (many to choose from), and they are easily embedded using their embed code.
