Embedding A Calculator?

Hi guys, I teach 8th grade math. We are starting our unit on The Number System and I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for graphing calculators that can be embedded into Formative. My students are going to need to be able to use the calculator to compare both rational and irrational numbers.

Hello! Have you tried using Desmos? I never had to use graphing calculators as I taught fifth grade so I am not sure if that is what you are looking for, but when I searched it, that was the first thing that came up. I know I have heard Desmos many times on this website.

Thank you so much! This is is just what I was looking for! We are diving into our unit on expressions & equations and this calculator will be great for students to be able to check their solutions to equations. My students will definitely appreciate that it’s button-based too. Thanks!

Oh by the way, I was poking around Desmos and found their classroom activities. Have you seen them yet? You can embed them into Formative so that students can respond to different types of questions as they take their formatives. Here’s Desmos’ Card Sort Q type embedded:

@casey.liu, this is really interesting. You are giving me soo many ideas.

I’m a fifth grade teacher and we love using Desmos! Learners are using it to graph their multiplicative and additive patterns as well as building their own growing patterns and determining the rules. Often they end up determining two-step rules which is awesome for fifth graders. Putting their work into Desmos, including tables, image of their patterns and expressions, help them to see that their rules are correct, or incorrect!

We also use Desmos to check our calculations when we play the Game 24.

If anyone has some other great ideas to incorporate Desmos especially in fifth grade math that would be awesome!

Have you tried iframe generator? It will embed any website for you to put on formative.

That way you can use desmos within formative and it won’t make it a new tab.

Here is a link to a demo with all three types of calculators that Desmos has that you can embed

That was awesome! Thanks for setting up that formative!

@casey.liu - My curriculum map just changed for next year and we are starting off with a unit that sounds very similar to the Number Sense unit you were talking about. Do you have any formatives you’d be willing to share that might fit the following standards? Thanks in advance!

Very useful Formative! Thank you for sharing. This will definitely come in handy at some point in creating my Formatives.

The Desmos calculators and pre-built activities work wonderfully!

Because you mentioned ration vs irrational numbers, below are the codes to two activities you may find of use:
What kind of number is it?
Clone Code: PFBCTD or https://goformative.com/clone/PFBCTD

What kind of number is it? (part 2)
Clone Code: KGXTEJ or https://goformative.com/clone/KGXTEJ

Well done, @hellerd!
